What week is it again?
This week was on the up and up! Finally I feel like I am recovering from midterms and other tests. I am able to practice again and enjoy doing my other activates outside of my core classes. I was super excited for this weeks singing lesson!
I am super excited for the first time in a while for my lesson! I got up at a good time and actually was mentally prepared for my lesson going in. I knew that this lesson I wanted to ask for another song because I had only ever technically been given one. I like Les Mis but I wanted something else to start practicing and to make me want to practice more than just the same song.
I was so excited and felt like I could finally relax going to lessons. I do not have to be worried about what today is like, I can show up to my lessons and give it what I can and that is more than enough!
I walked into my lesson and the first thing we did was just talk for a few minutes. My vocal professor would ask how my week has been and how I am feeling about everything. She was happy that I was here and feeling better and it felt so genuine!
Her piano was finally tuned, for her grand piano in her office has been out of tune since the beginning of the semester. So we finally got to sing with a real piano! We would start warming up with "ya" up the scale and down, moving to "ah" up and down, and finally "hah" up and down. She would ask me to go a bit higher than we normally do but asked if it felt comfortable BEFORE moving on. It really felt no different then the rest of my singing. She would ask me to sing through the warm ups again but to sing using my core.
After warming up she would ask what I want to do this lesson and I asked her if we could look at some new songs for me to sink my teeth in! We would spend the next 15 minutes or so just talking about what type of music I had in mind and what kind of music I should try. I have previously been stuck with classical music but I do not want to sing that anymore.
She would give me a few options and I ended up loving a piece from the Jekyll and Hyde musical called Once Upon a Dream! It is such a beautiful piece!
The only other singing we did during the lesson was listening to the new piece and then to play and sing along to the music while having the sheet music in front of me. I loved being able to get a new piece and then to sing through it even though it was rough. It was my first time singing through it and it was far from perfect but it was fun!
